St. Mary Roman Catholic Church
Blessed on July 26, 1904 by Bishop McFaul
It wasn't long before a small group of Catholics, most from Hungarian immigrants employed by the cement-making plant, came together to form a new church community. On August 24, 1902 there was a meeting held by this new church community. In this meeting a resolution was made to buy land and raise funds to build a church. At this time a committee was appointed to canvas the area and solicit funds, which eventurally came not only from the Hungarians, but Catholics of other nationalities as well.
The property that St. Mary Church stands on was purchased on October 12 1902 and a formal certificate of incorporation was signed. Then on January 21, 1903 the resolution to build the church was signed. Work progressed smoothly, and within a few months, Bishop McFaul named Reverend Charles Policsek the pastor of St. Mary. Rev. Policsek performed the parish's first baptism on August 15, 1903. From August 15, 1903 to December 31, 1903, the parish records show five marriages were celebrated.
Nearly seventy years later, in 1973 the original St. Mary Church was torn down. The new church construction began on April 9, 1956 where it stands today. It was progressing slowly but steadily over the next year. On September 1, 1957 St. Mary's magnificent new church was opened for public worship for the first time.
On March 22, 1988, erected in place of the old church and next to the existing parish house, is what we know now as the Rev. Msgr. Antony J. Luisini Parish Center. Construction to the new parish center was completed in the summer of 1991 and Bishop Hughes dedicated the addition on September 28, 1991. This is where our parish children do religious education and where various parish organizations come together for their meetings & celebrations!
